Abstract
Roland Barthes's five-code model—hermeneutic, proairetic, semic, symbolic, and cultural—offers a rigorous framework for uncovering the hidden layers of narrative texts. Applying this model to the Qur’anic story of Prophet Abraham, a narrative deeply imbued with monotheistic doctrines and spiritual progression, this study employs a descriptive-analytical method to extract its semantic strata. The findings confirm the full applicability of all five codes. The hermeneutic code generates suspense through enigmas—the nature of the Lord, Abraham's deliverance from the fire, the divine rationale behind the sacrifice of Ishmael, and the four birds—leading the reader toward gradual revelation. The proairetic code structures a coherent sequence of actions: the quest for truth, idol-breaking, migration, angelic hospitality, and the sacrificial trial, all culminating in Abraham's attainment of the station of Imamate and his prayer for enduring monotheism. The semic code foregrounds the implicit connotations of Abraham's attributes (Khalīl Allāh, Ḥanīf, absolute submission) and of sacred locales such as Bayt al-ʿAtīq and the barren valley. The symbolic code dramatizes foundational oppositions—faith against disbelief, monotheism against idolatry, submission against rebellion, and security against fear—while the cultural code articulates enduring civilizational paradigms, including servitude, Hajj, sacrifice, and the archetype of monotheistic life.
