Semiotic analysis examines linguistic signs and codes in literary texts to uncover hidden layers of meaning and generate new interpretations. The Holy Qur’an is a text characterized by multiple layers of meaning and a rich repository of educational, intellectual, philosophical, mystical, and other forms of knowledge. The Qur’an's educational approach is based on methods and principles designed to influence its audience. To convey its teachings, the Holy Qur’an employs every rational and appropriate method, among which jidāl al-aḥsan ("arguing in the best manner") is one of the principal methods through which the Qur’an invites its audience to the truth. Accordingly, this study offers a Barthesian semiotic analysis of the codes of jidāl al-aḥsan in the Qur’anic narratives concerning the Children of Israel. Drawing on Roland Barthes' theory and employing a descriptive-analytical method, it seeks to uncover the semantic implications of these codes and reveal their multiple layers of meaning, thereby providing a new interpretation of jidāl al-aḥsan. The study seeks to uncover the semantic implications of these codes and reveal their multiple layers of meaning, thereby providing a new interpretation of jidāl al-aḥsan. The analysis of the verses concerning the Children of Israel indicates that the Qur’an employs Barthes' hermeneutic, proairetic (action), semantic, cultural, and symbolic codes to present historical events and truths progressively, to emphasize patience and rational argumentation in contrast to impatience, and to express and to demonstrate God's compassion toward the Children of Israel.
